JENNY VAN REEUWIJK
Jenny van Reeuwijk has always been an artist, but it wasn't until the age of 56 after raising a family and being the creative force behind other people's business that she turne to painting, proving that it is never too late to start a new chapter.
Encouraged by renowned Dutch Frans de Kok, van Reeuwijk began expressing herself through oil painting, focusing on portraiture. Rather than academically studying the artists such as Kees van Dongen and Renee Margriets that inspired her. Van Reeuwijk would recreate their work on canvas to understand the techniques and nuances behind their success.
As the famous adage by Picasso states, "Good artists copy, great artists steal".
Van Reeuwijk takes elements from multiple sources and combines them to create something new. Her reinterpretations of found images and other artist's work form a familiar yet surreal point of view entirely her own. Iconography from as far back as the 1600's mingle with popular culture images from the end of the 20th. century in bold colours bordering on the garish.
Paint is expertly applied, often thicky. so the canvas becomes a form of sculpture. This highly unique stylistic features are usually done in large scale, commanding the viewers rapt attention.
Van Reeuwijk paints every day and believe her most significant contributions to painting are yet to come as she continues to age and mature. Van Reeuwijk first major solo exhibition at Goodwood Art Gallery in Antwerp Belgium opens October 10th. till November 17th. 2024.
Her work is in private collections in New York, Houston, Paris, London, Berlin, Holland and Belgium.
